How Our Seaweed-Based Products Can Help Reduce Fertilizer Leaching

 

Synthetic fertilizers used in conventional farming practices come with a financial and environmental toll. These man-made fertilizers saturate the soil with macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, etc.), but disrupt the organic systems that recycle these nutrients. In some cases, they may reduce the levels of beneficial microorganisms that convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms that plants can use.

What happens to those excess nutrients? Often, they encourage the growth of weeds along with your intended crops. And any nitrogen that goes unused can leach into the water table (creating dead zones for animals in local bodies of water) or re-enter the atmosphere causing acid rain. That’s bad for your local ecosystem.

Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed extract, which forms the basis of our products, enhances root growth leading to a better uptake of nutrients from the soil. In addition, Acadian seaweed extract feeds the bacteria that crops rely on to convert nitrogen into a useful form.
