Acadian Plant Health™ seaweed extracts have a strong fit in cherry production by improving fruit size and quality of this high-value crop. APH™ extracts have been shown in independent trials to increase size, firmness, and stem-attachment force in cherries. All of these attributes improve the value of the fruit in the market, and potentially increase shelf life.
APH™ seaweed extracts contribute to better stress tolerance by improving the plants’ water use efficiency and increasing antioxidant production during times of stress; this results in reduction in the number of spurs and doubles in the following season’s crop.
On both established and newly planted orchards, the fucose rich sulphated polysaccharides and alginates stimulate root growth, leading to improved tree establishment, and increased water and nutrient uptake.
BENEFITS FOR CHERRIES INCLUDE:
- Increased size
- Increased firmness
- Stronger stem attachment
- Increased quality

CHERRY TRIAL ‘SIMONE’
Cherries treated with APH™ seaweed extract are larger and heavier. In this trial conducted by the University of Tasmania, treated Simone cherries achieved larger size and weight, and would have obtained a better price based on their size.
CHERRY TRIAL ‘BING’
OREGON, UNITED STATES
In this trial conducted by Oregon State University, Bing cherries treated with APH™ seaweed extract achieved desirable colour earlier, and their colour was more uniform, potentially leading to more uniform harvest and fewer picks.
In the same Oregon University trial, when APH™ seaweed extract was applied with gibberellic acid, cherry firmness was increased at harvest and after storage. In addition, pitting was reduced after storage.
Pitting is a cherry disorder that may develop within a week in cold storage and appears as one or more irregular depressions in the surface of the fruit.
CHERRY TRIAL ‘BING’
CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES
Different letters indicate significant differences between treatments (p=0.01).
In this California trial, when APH™ seaweed extract was applied with gibberellic acid, the treated cherries were firmer and had a higher stem attachment force than control (standard program that included gibberellic acid). These characteristics increase the shelf life of cherries.
